Geonames Mobile
Test Version 0.1
The Geonames Mobile application is a "Location Based Services" application for mobile devices.
The application reads your current position from your mobile phone and displays geonames features close to your current position.
Functions of Geonames Mobile :
- Place and Postal code of your current position.
- Lakes near you
- Mountains near you
- Wikipedia articles about interesting items near you
- Tagzania items in your area.
- search location and use functions for any place not only your current position.
How does the device know the current location?
For devices with a GPS receiver the position is discovered with GPS. Devices without GPS use the
mobile phone network to discover the location of the phone. For the latter discovering the location
depends on the network transmitting location information. In many countries it is therefore not
possible to discover location with a mobile phone without a GPS receiver. We would like to compile a list
of countries where this is already possible and need your help for this.

Supported Mobile Devices
Geonames Mobile is using java location (jsr179) to read the current position from your mobile device.
Newer phones from most vendors (except Sony-Ericsson) are supporting this feature. Some devices as the "Siemens SXG75"
have a built in GPS recievers while others use the network of the cellphone carrier to determine the location
and may work in some countries and not in others.
Geonames Mobile works also on devices without jsr179 support, in this case the user has to manually enter the current position. (lat/lng or with the geonames search function running on the device)

Siemens : SXG75 (includes a gps receiver), C70,C72,C75,CF75, CF76,CX70,CX75,M75,S75,SL75,ME75,SK65,SL65,S65,M65,CX65,C65
Sony-Ericsson does not support jsr179 and location based services as far as we know.
